“Down, ready set, hut, hut!”

It’s that time of year again, when high school football coaches break out the whistles, shoulder pads and helmets to prepare for the excitement, rigors and challenges of the upcoming season.

Second-year Head Coach Cody French is coming off a 6-4 season in which his Warriors went 2-3 in the South Shore Conference, finishing in third for the   year. The nucleus of that team graduated last year, taking with it senior leadership like All-State Defensive Lineman George Winfield III and fellow defensive player Koran Jefferson.

According to French, that leaves a scrappy squad made up of experienced juniors mixed with up-and-coming sophomores.

“We’re looking good,” French says. “We’re going to be young, but our numbers are good. We have between 55 and 60 [players] every day. We feel like, if we have consistency with kids showing up and practicing every day, the rest will take care of itself.”

The Warriors open up the season on the road against Bowman Academy on August 19. They will not feel the love of the Calumet New Tech Stadium until September 23, against arch-rivals the Griffith Panthers.
